CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY

1. CONSTRUCTION OF MUNICIPAL WORKS
In construction of municipal works, Shantou has formed a multifunctional and modern city structure with perfect assorting facilities. The urban areas has been built and enlarged from 7.25 sq/km in 1978 to 96.6 sq/km in 2000. There are 610 km of streets and the supply of running water is 9.7 billion tons per day and the electric power 2.05 billion kwh. The coverage of green area is up to 31.96% with 5.32 sq/m public green land per person. Eight parks have been built in the city. Public transportation has been developed into multi-level traffic network with 28 lines of public buses, special line buses, over 2.687 taxis and passenger ships. Special line buses for tourism and buses for sightseeing are in operation.

2. CONSTRUCTION OF RESIDENCES
Following the method of “collecting fund through various channels and participated by the whole society”, Shantou has made great achievements in residence construction by different ways like building the preferential residences with government subsidy, “cheap rent” residences, undertaking the “Residence Settlement Project”, rebuilding the old urban area, and developing the real estates.
Since 1990, over 22 billion RMB has been invested on real estates, completing 26.08 million sq/m of various commodity residences. Today more and more beautiful residence areas and high-rise buildings with perfect facilities have been built in the urban. Intelligence-controlled residences and ecology residences are being developed step by step. Residence areas managed by the society, special teams and enterprises are up to over 200. Since 1995, 18 residence areas (buildings) have been chosen as “the national outstanding (model) property management residence area (building)”. The living condition of the residents has been greatly improved.

3. ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION
Shantou is undertaking the strategy of sustainable development, sticking to industry pollution prevention and ecologic environment protection and promoting the coordinate development among economy, society and environment. For several years in quantity examination of city comprehensive management, Shantou has been listed in the front in 46 key cities and in 2000 again gained the title of “national model city of environment protection ”, which shows that Shantou advances in front in environment protection. The atmosphere quality in the urban is better than the second grade of national standard and the qualified rates of drinking water sources, water quality and city ground water quality are kept on higher level. Six environment protection supervision stations have been built in the urban. The qualified rate of controlling environmental noise is up to 61%, the coverage rate of controlling smoke and dust is 100% and the qualified rate of controlling discharge of industrial polluted water is up to 95.78%. The environmental protection consciousness of Shantou people has been raised day by day. Local regulations to ban car whistling, fireworks and firecrackers have carried out effectively. Shantou has set up the only experiment field in China for dynamoelectric cars and recommends people to use environment protection goods (green refrigerator, environment-protection conditioners, lead-free gasoline and non-polluted vegetables). All these provide people with a more green and beautiful living environment.
